Students at two Compton Unified School District (CUSD) schools are in jeopardy of missing out on a great opportunity to gain an advantage of going to college. Vanguard Learning Center and Centennial High School have recently contracted with the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE). The Institute trains parents (in English & Spanish) through a series of classes of how to work with the school, and other resources to ensure their student(s) are prepared…

What should be done with "Sparkle" should be the same as was done with James Dean with "Rebel Without A Cause" and "Giant." Let the film be released in August 2012 as planned. Releasing a rough cut now only makes things go from bad to worse.

It is so sad that my profession, the media can’t restrain itself in bringing out dirt about Whitney Houston while she lies in state at the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark.
Putting pictures of the bathtub where Whitney succumbed is not only in bad taste, but downright morbid. Now we’re hearing that Whitney was broke because of drugs. Next there will be more stories of Whitney going to doctors for prescription drugs to get through the day, etc.
Why can’t the…

At least they gave Whitney a moment last night. That's all it was. I went on the Grammy website and informed NARA that they dissed Jimmy Sabater by not including him in the memorial. An insult to Puerto Rico and all the fans and admirers of this great balladeer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWHlJUHogNA.

"Joe Cuba Presents The Velvet Voice of (La Voz Sutil de) Jimmy Sabater." This was one of the most beautiful albums ever recorded. Jimmy's voice was soothing and magical. I will never forget a night so long ago at a club in the South Bronx called "The Casino Puerto Rico." I was there with Alex Gonzalez, his brother Edwin, and their mom. Joe was playing there that night. After the first set, the guys came to our table. We bought them drinks and we rapped. Very gracious. Thank you Joe and…

As each day goes by and we learn more and more about the horrors that occurred at Miramonte Elementary School, located in an unincorporated area of the Florence-Firestone community in South Los Angeles, we have to ask why did it take so long?
Ever since the 80’s when allegations of child abuse by parents and teachers reported these incidents to principals, the message was always the same “You don’t have proof. You shouldn’t go around making accusations.”
The…

My friend Juan Gonzalez wrote this on Thursday in his column for the New York Daily News
The Treasury Department approved pay packages worth $5 million or more for 49 executives at a handful of firms that received the biggest taxpayer bailouts between 2009 and 2011.
A scathing new audit this week by the inspector general for the Troubled Asset Relief Program blasted those payments, all of which occurred despite a $500,000 salary cap that President Obama…

As Compton City Hall makes the transition into compliance with AB 1344, now would be a good time to take a look at residents' abuse of government. Neglect is a passive form of abuse and the branch of government that empowers residents the most, has been thoroughly…

Williams returned to Trinidad and Tobago and became more involved in politics. His first major political speech was titled My Relations with the Caribbean Commission (1955). A year later, Williams formed the People's National Movement (PNM), a political party of which he became the leader. In September of 1956, the PNM won the national elections and he became the chief minister of the country from 1956 to 1959, premier from 1959 to 1962, and prime minister from 1962 to 1981. During his term…

When you're a little kid, you don't see color, and the fact that my friends were black never crossed my mind. It never became an issue until I was a teenager and started trying to rap.

It is a shame today, that racism, a big issue in today's world is still alive. I told my grandson, "I may not be in Africa, but AFRICA is in me. He may not be from India, but "India is in him".

The passing of former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno comes at a time when someone who accomplished so much on the field of play (409 victories in 46 seasons) will not be remembered as one of the great football geniuses but instead as someone who covered up a tragic and embarrassing child sex scandal involving his ex defensive coach Jerry Sandusky.
Perhaps as we so sadly have to admit is that the armor that we encase our heroes and idols in isn’t without tarnish. Too…
